What is PTSD treatment?
PTSD treatment is a medical approach to managing the long-term effects of trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious mental health condition that develops after exposure to traumatic events such as violence, abuse, combat, or severe accidents. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, mood disturbance, and emotional numbness, and they frequently disrupt relationships, work, and daily life.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 6% of adults in the United States will experience PTSD in their lifetime, and roughly 5% live with PTSD in any given year.
Why PTSD treatment matters
Without treatment, PTSD increases the risk of co-occurring conditions including depression, substance use disorders, and suicidal thinking. It also impairs memory, sleep, and emotional regulation, which limits a person's ability to function at work and in relationships.
Treatment aims to reduce the severity of symptoms, improve emotional resilience, and support recovery over the long term, with medical oversight of how you respond.
Who PTSD treatment is for
PTSD treatment is recommended for adults who:
- Relive a traumatic event through flashbacks, nightmares or intrusive memories
- Avoid people, places or conversations that are reminders of the trauma
- Feel persistently on edge, easily startled, or unable to relax
- Experience emotional numbness or detachment from people close to them
- Have noticed low mood, substance use or sleep problems developing since the event
If you are having thoughts of suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 if there is immediate danger to life.
How PTSD treatment works at Clear Path
- Book an appointment and complete your intake before you meet your provider.
- Psychiatric evaluation by video. A full assessment covering your history, current symptoms, previous responses to medication, and any physical health conditions that affect treatment choices.
- Ongoing medication management. Scheduled monthly follow-up visits to review symptoms using validated rating scales, screen for side effects, adjust your dose where indicated, and review lab work where a medication calls for it.
Appointments are live, synchronous video consultations. At Clear Path we emphasize meaningful interactions with our practitioners, giving you the time and attention you deserve.

- California licensed, California focused. One state, and providers licensed in it.
- A structured follow-up schedule. Monthly reviews with validated symptom scales, side effect screening, dose adjustment and lab review where indicated.

Common questions
What are the main symptoms of PTSD?
PTSD symptoms fall into four groups: intrusive memories such as flashbacks and nightmares, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, negative changes in mood and thinking, and hyperarousal such as being constantly on edge or startling easily. Physical symptoms including headaches, fatigue and disturbed sleep are also common.
How is PTSD treated with medication?
Antidepressants, most often SSRIs, are the medications with the strongest evidence in PTSD and can reduce anxiety, low mood and sleep disturbance. Medication does not erase the trauma; it supports your ability to function and to engage with therapy, and it works best alongside trauma-focused psychological treatment.
Does insurance cover online PTSD treatment?
Most major plans cover psychiatric care delivered by video the same way they cover any other outpatient visit. We accept Anthem Blue Cross of California, Blue Shield of California, Aetna, Optum and Cigna/Evernorth, and we verify your benefits before your first appointment.
Can PTSD be treated years after the traumatic event?
Yes. PTSD can develop months or years after a traumatic event, and treatment is effective regardless of how long symptoms have been present. Delayed presentation is common and does not reduce the likelihood of improvement.
Do I need to be in California for my appointment?
Yes. Our providers are licensed in California, so you need to be physically located in the state at the time of your appointment. You can join from anywhere in California that is private enough for a clinical conversation.
